Default "Failed to Initialize the Modeling Engine" message

ERROR - "Failed to Initialize the Modeling Engine"
I get this message whenever I open a VSD file that is a database model. I
can open flowchart VSD files ok. Does anyone know the reason why? I did look
in Help and found no reference to this message. I cannot find Visio on my PC
but I was able to create flowcharts and modeling diagrams before by going to
a PC that does have Visio, creating the file and then modifying it on my own
PC.
Thanks.

the database modeling tool is one of the addins that comes with the
professional/ea versions of visio. It requires code to be installed on the
system that is acting upon the model. Being able to do flowcharts doesn't
infer being able to do db modeling.

Default "Failed to Initialize the Modeling Engine" message

This is a response from Microsoft to this problem a while ago...

By the way - our testing so far shows that the problem is occurring when
installing the MS08-019 update on Visio 2003 SP2. If you then update to
SP3, you should be okay. Similarly, if you have SP3 and apply the security
update, the problem doesn't occur as well. It seems to only happen with
Visio 2003 SP2 and the security update.

I have Visio for Enterprise Architects SP3 (11.8207.8202).

I am also getting this very problem - failed to initialize the
modelling engine whenever I try to create or open a database diagram.

Default Visio object model fail

We have Visio SP@ (11.8207.8202) SP3 with the KB947650 and I get the Errpr: Failed to initialise modelling engine when opening both the Database Model Diagram (Metric and US units) and I have opened them from the C drive 1033 folder and get the same issue - any further progress on this? MY whole organisation is getting it.

For now the only way to use the Database Modeling tools with Visio 2003 SP2
or SP3 is to remove the security update (MS08-019), which be applied to
either service pack level.

There is development under way to create a fix for this issue, but it is
not available yet. I will post an update here when something is available.

Default "Failed to Initialize the Modeling Engine" message

Hello All -
A fix has been released which will resolve this issue and allow you to
work with the DB Modeling solution after the installation of the security
update in MS08-019.

The new hotfix ID is 958641, and it is available now, but must be requested
through (no-charge) support. You can review the options for making contact
with the support organization on the website here :
http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support

The article for the fix is : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958641

Two items of note:
This update is basedline on Visio 2003 SP3, and unless that SP level is

installed, the update will not install.
The article is being updated, and currently doesn't list the db modeling

issue among the issues fixed.
