I work with windows98 word 97.
From time to time I receive the usual error message “this program
peformed..” etc, and then word closes . When I try to open again my
work file the program announces that “the file is already in use. Do
you want to make a copy?”
I can then work properly on the copy, but the former work file remains
anywhere in background, and I don’t succeed to find it.
How can I find and load the original file?

Try this:

1. Ctrl+Alt+Delete to get the "Task Manager"

2. Click on "Applications"

3. Find the document in the list

4. Click on it to highlight the document

5. Click on "End Task"

thanks turmoil but I do not find "task manager' on the ctrl+alt+del pop
menu, neither . perhaps it has some other name?
I had the same error just now. I must make a copy of the document and
then rename it and delete the former one. It is not so complicated but
troublesome.
any idea how to find the original one?
thanks

Here is a link that will help you find files for Windows '98. You can
specify the day it was created or specific words in the document to
narrow down your search.

http://www.bcschools.net/staff/Windows98.htm#FindFiles

Does the "in use" happen on a new blank document?

If these files that are causing you to display the "in use" message are
the same ones you have been working on then you may have a corrupt
normal.dot on some of these documents. You can find the normal.dot and
delete and it will re-create it.

If none of these options work please post back because someone else may
be able to pick up something that was missed.

Good luck!
