Default Cannoy launch OE, cannot import dbx into Outlook either

I get this error: Outlook Express could not be started. The application was
unable to creat the font cache object. Your computer may be out of memory or
your disk is full. Contact Microsoft support for further assistance.
(0x8007000E, 14007)

I have 2 GB RAM and over 60 GB available on my hard drive.

When I click OK on the first message, I get this second message: Outlook
Express could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized.
Outlook Express may not be installed correctly.

I uninstalled and reinstalled OE. I uninstalled, ran Registry Mechanic, and
reinstalled. I get the exact same messages every time.

So I tried launching Outlook. I successfully imported my addresses and my
rules, but the messages will not import. I have to point to the folder where
they are, but they will not import. I get the message : "The mail folder
could not be opened. If another application is using this file, please close
it and try again."

OE is not running, Messenger isn't running - in fact, I closed everything
including Norton and I still get the same message.

Any ideas? I am desperate to retreive the messages!

From:
http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/directdb.htm

Errors in DIRECTDB.DLL or MSOE.DLL generally indicate corruption in the
message store. Start by moving Folders.dbx to an empty Windows folder. You
will lose your folder hierarchy and the lists of newsgroups on the news
servers, but it might get you into OE. Note: The DBX file are hidden files
in Win2K, WinXP and Win2K03.

If that doesn't do it then move all of the DBX files to the same folder as
Folders.dbx. You should now get into OE. Try importing the messages from the
folder you moved the DBX files to. If you can't, you can use one of these
tools to extract the messages:

DBXtract:
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx

DBXpress: {much faster for large files}
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx

Note: It can take a long time (days with really large folders).

The messages can then be dragged from the Windows folder back into a folder
in an open instance of OE.

Thank you, Bruce. I had tried to folder options with no success. I will
have to purchase one of the tools, I guess.

Thank you for the help.

Any other ideas?

Did you move Folders.dbx to an empty Windows folder and then move all the

Yes. I did this befoire I even posted here. I have tried it several times
since, using both dbx and eml files in the folders to no avail.

If you extracted the files, in what format are they? And where are they
stored?

Once you completed the extraction, did you then *move* all of the corrupted
DBX files that were in your message store folder to another location on your
hard drive?

If you are unsure of the location of the message store on your computer, you
can use the Registry Editor to determine the location:

To determine the message store folder location if OE cannot be opened, look
in the registry under this key (Start/Run and type: regedit ):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}

Where GUID above is the key for each identity. If unsure, double click each
GUID to check the username involved, then expand the key further for that
particular user to \Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0 (clicking on the
5.0 to expand it) and look at the value in the "StoreRoot" key in the right
hand pane.

The reason you are still getting an error message, is most likely that your
corrupted files are still in the same location. The extraction as EML files
has not done anything else to the corrupted DBX files and you will have to
move (not copy) them. Good luck.

Thank you Jim. My answers follow. I have tried all you and others suggested
and continue to get the same errors. I have spent over 10 hours trying to
resolve this so far and am very frustrated. I even deleted all my identities
in the Registry (backing them up first) and rebooted to create a new Main
Identity to no avail.

"Jim Pickering" wrote:

The extracted files are eml and are located on my desktop in a New Folder.
I can neither import them or the dbx files into Outlook nor can I open

Extacted EML files can be dragged/dropped into a local mail folder in
Outlook Express. Just drag/drop them into the Preview Pane of the desired
folder.

Once you completed the extraction, did you then *move* all of the
corrupted
DBX files that were in your message store folder to another location on

Yes, I moved them all from their previous storage location (My
Documents/email/) to a new folder called mail on my desktop. I dragged
everything - dbx files, folders and all from the previous location to the
new
folder on my desktop.

I'd suggest you then use Windows Explorer to navigate to that old folder and
make sure it is empty. Sometimes a drag/drop can result in a copy operation,
rather than a complete move and if the corrupted DBX files are still there
in the store folder, you will get the error message.

Where GUID above is the key for each identity. If unsure, double click
each

All it is intended to indicate is the folder where it looks for the DBX
files. It will not show any DBX files. If you are still having a problem,
I would suggest creating a folder and call it MailStore and create it on
your root drive (i.e., C:\ at the root and not in some subfolder) and after
creating that empty folder, amend the registry to show that location
(C:\MailStore). That should allow Outlook Express to open with a new and
empty set of default folders (Inbox, Sent Items, Drafts, etc.). Good luck.
