Default Seeking OE5.5 "Send a Link" functionality with OE6 WinXp

I had become very accustomed to using the "Send a Link" feature with
IE6/OE5.5/Win98 as a means of collecting info from the web and saving them as
Drafts but have recently upgraded to a TabletPC with IE6/OE6/WinXp in which
"Send a Link" functionality has been degraded. Instead of creating an OE5.5
email with the linked webpage title in the Subject line and in the attached
link, OE6 creates a non-descriptive subject line and link attachment with
only the URL page name ("page123" versus "Descriptive title of webpage
contents") and also adds the unwanted phrase "The message is ready to be sent
with the following file or link attachments: Shortcut to:" before the URL in
the body of the email.

The question is how to regain the OE5.5 "Send a Link" functionality. Can
OE6 be reconfigured with this functionality and/or can OE6 be uninstalled and
OE5.5 installed in a WinXpProTablet environment? The workaround of dragging
and dropping, copying, pasting, deleting, etc., is much more time consuming
than the old "Send a Link" function. Alternatively, if it were the only way,
would installing and switching to Outlook 2003 provide the functionality?

I always Copy & Paste links myself. That said, the best you can do is:

Link Sent by E-mail Is Incomplete in Subject Line and Does Not Appear in
Message Body:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=327010

The registry edit in the second half of this KB article will remove the
virus warning. It will not remove the text identifying the attachment
however.

Default Seeking OE5.5 "Send a Link" functionality with OE6 WinXp

Thanks Bruce, but that Knowledge Base article refers specifically to a hotfix
for Windows XP SP1 and I already have XP SP2 in which this hotfix would
supposedly have been incorporated. The hotfix described "is only intended to
correct the problem that is described in this article" which is not what is
happening. Having a "complete URL in the subject line or in the body of the
e-mail message" is not the "Send a Link" functionality of OE5.5 with the page
TITLE in the subject line and as the label of the attached link, and whatever
fix they added to XP SP2 did not restore that functionality. The added text
in the body of the email is what I quoted and not the virus warning mentioned
in the KB article, but I guess the fix mentioned would remove any text
message beyond the URL. As far as my others questions, would you know if I
can install OE5.5 under WinXpPro or whether Outlook 2003 sends links like
OE5.5? Thanks.

You are stuck with what you've got. There is no way to run OE5.5 in XP.

Default Seeking OE5.5 "Send a Link" functionality with OE6 WinXp

Thanks Steve. I was just about to finally try uninstalling OE6 and
installing OE5.5 on my WinXp system. For my further understanding, could you
or someone else explain briefly why there is no way to run OE5.5 in XP? For
that matter, is there a logical reason why the descriptive functionality of
Send-a-Link in OE versions prior to OE6 (see original message for details)
was degraded? And, still unanswered from my original message, how is the
Send-a-Link functionality with Outlook?

There is no logic to the reason they changed the behavior. Their so called
reason was "security".

I don't know about Office. Check in one of their newsgroups.

OE5.5 won't install in XP, because XP won't tolerate it. There were too
many changes between the two and OE was integrated into the OS in version 6.

Its much easier just to copy and paste the link, rather than do hoops to get
around the stupid behavior.

What version of sendmail.dll are you using?
FWIW here is mine:

filever
--a-- W32i DLL ENU 6.0.2900.2180 shp 55,296 08-03-2004 sendmail.dll
/filever

I'm currently using IE7rtm but I suspect sendmail.dll was not changed
by it. My Send Link by E-mail does not produce a .URL file attachment
any more. In a test E-mail I see Subject: page title and body contains
just the URL as seen in the Address bar.

BTW DependencyWalker shows that sendmail.dll contains an entrypoint
called DllRegisterServer; so regsvr32 sendmail.dll could be tried in case
something related to this feature is broken in the registry.

Have you tried IE7 yet? Doing that could shake up the bits in the registry too. ; )

Good luck

Robert Aldwinckle
