Problems importing/recovering old PST

I am running Win XP Pro SP3 with Office XP (2002). My system crashed so I am
rebuilding and am trying to pull in my old .pst file from my original disk
connected via usb.

When I try to import the file I get an access denied error.

When I try to change ownership of the pst file by right clicking properties,
I do not get a security tab. I then went into Control Panel Folder options
and unchecked the following:
Use simple file share...
Display simple folder...
The security tab still does not show up in the properties of the .pst file.

Are my approaches incorrect? I really need to get this pst file back as it
has a 5 year history of content that I need. How should I proceed?

Another strange thing is that the modifcation date on the pst file is years
older than expected. I would have expected it to have the last date that I
opened mail. Is that an incorrect assumption?

Importing is always an incorrect method for transferring Outlook data. You
copy the PST file to your current hard drive. You open it in Outlook.

which may overwrite an existing pst, thereby corrupting the Profile

OK. Here is what I am trying to do. Because I could no longer boot my
system, I am rebuilding my xp sp3 /office 2002 system. I have an
administrator account that I only use to install sw and a user account that I
do all my work from including outlook. So I tried copying my outlook.pst
file to C:\documents and settings and it failed because of permissions I
think.
Then I logged in using admin acct and copied to the aformentioned directory
and opened it in outlook. It seems like its empty and there is no inbox or
mailboxes.
What am I doing wrong? I have critical email I need to get.
Also, shouldnt the modification date on the .pst be the date of the last
email? It is not. I also looked for an .ost file and there is none.
I appreciate anyone who can help.
A related note is the email notification that I receive about a response
here leads me to a blank page.

Locate any copy of your data file in the My Documents folder
Configure outlook, once working, within Outlook, FileOpenPersonal
Folders..........browse to the My Documents location and open the pst
If its empty then you either copied, origonaly, the wrong file or you didnt
copy but did an export

ost files are used in an exchange configeration

The original drive is connected via usb and I found the archive.pst and
outlook.pst at \Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Can I just copy these files to the C drive under the directory path listed
above? Will this destroy the profile? Will the email be accessible once I
logon as that user?

Yes its likely to destroy any profile, if files of the same name exits
Copy to My Documents folder
Or within the outlook default path on the current installation rename any
same name files found then copy your old files to there

Taking ownership of the file is the correct approach. Try doing it in Windows
Safe mode.

OK, so I copied my outlook.pst file from original drive to c:\documents and
settings\user\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook and then
opened outlook.
I received the following prompt (paraphrased):
Location that messages are delivered to has changed for this user profile.
You may need to copy the contents of the old outlook folders to the new
oultlook folders.
....
Some shortcuts in the outlook bar may no longer work. Do you want outlook
to recreate? I chose no.
Now My important emails that were put in its own folder (by an outlook rule)
are no longer there and the folder is not there. How do I get this working
again?
Closing and reopening outlook will not prompt me with the orignal question
above.

Did you overwrite an existing pst?
In Control panelMail applet set your current data file as default

If a folder is missing either it has been inadvertantly moved, within
Outlook, by you, (I assume you are looking at folders tree view) or you have
copied the wrong pst

The modification date of your origonal pst should be that of the last time
you successfully opened Outlook in its origonal state
