Default Slide Master Layout – Choose Elements to include

I want to be able to exclude some of the standard elements in my Slide
Master. I have gone to Master View, selected the Slide Master thumbnail and
clicked the Master Layout icon but all the options are greyed out. I have
tried it with and without Preserve Master on. How do I enable these options?
I already have slides with content in my presentation – does that make any
difference?

I am using PowerPoint 2007

Mary Ann,
I gather you mean you want to delete (exclude) some of the placeholders on
the master?
The moment you delete them, then click your Master Layout icon, you will be
able to put the deleted placeholder back. The checkboxes next to the
placeholders you deleted will not be grayed out, the ones you have not
deleted will still be grayed.

Oh I see - that makes sense. I delete the placeholder to exclude an element
and only use the Master Layout icon to reinstate them. Thanks
