%20
If I open an existing document in a Office 2003 app (Excel or Work), and then
choose "Save As" & in the file name specify the file to be saved to a diskette by adding "a:" in front of the file name, the file name is saved & instead of a space between words it shows %20. This doesn't occur if in the "Save In" window, I select the A drive. Ex:I open "test letter.doc" in Word 2003, then select "Save As" and in the file name field, I'd type "A:test letter.doc" and the file name will be actually saved onto the disk as "test%20letter.doc". |

The easiest thing is the most obvious - don't use a space in a file name.

I realize that is the easiest work around but it's quite limiting in naming
files. Also, as I stated in my post, a work around is to select the A drive from the "Save In" window... I was hoping someone at Microsoft would instead point me to an update I missed (even though their update tool says I have all the updates) or someone at Microsoft would test the problem & report it as a bug. Problem solved long time ago as the "underscore" character has
historically been used as a "space". Colleen wrote: I realize that is the easiest work around but it's quite limiting in naming files. Bob, thanks for the suggestion but it is still just a workaround and not a
solution. After long file names came into use, the prior Office & Microsoft products did not work this way. It's silly in 2005 to go backwards in the way of file naming. If others are experiencing this, then Microsoft should add it to a list of thing to fix in a future update. Hi Colleen,
The %20 replacement for spaces is mainly for web browser compatability using a W3C (http://w3c.org) HTML standard character (not all browsers do well with spaces in links to documents). The change will occur when you preceed the file name with any drive letter (not just a diskette) and will occur even if you put the name of the file in quotes, which is an instance where it probably shouldn't, if the name directly follows a drive letter and a colon. It's a feature designed to help users saving to a MS Office Sharepoint library have hyperlink accessible filenames. There are two workarounds: (A) The one you mentioned, navigate to the save location to save the file. (B) Include a folder name/level in your save. For example to save to the root (base) of your A: drive type in A:\test letter rather than A:test letter ========= "Colleen" wrote in message ... Oh, I'm sorry to have overlooked the other part of the issue. NEVER,
NEVER, NEVER, work directly off of or to floppy disks in Office applications. That is a booby trap just waiting to be sprung. If you need a copy of the doc on the floppy, put it there using Windows explorer, as Word will also put the tmp file there. Bob, thanks for the informative reply. Is there some function to turn off so
the Office apps don't think I saving the files on a system that uses MS Office Sharepoint library? All of these files I am saving are existing Word 2000 or Excel 200 docs on my hard drive which I modify & then save to a diskette. Hi Colleen,
There isn't a setting to change the behavior but simply typing a backslash after your drive letter (A:\filename rather than A:filename) should keep the problem from happening. ===== "Colleen" wrote in message ... Bob, thanks again for your reply. Adding a "\" into my file names is easier &
quicker than having to go back & rename the file, so I guess I'll have to be happy with that. It's still frustrating though to have to do so when it was never required before in future versions..... Oh well.......
