Default Cursor Disappears and Text Not Displayed After Pressing TAB

Hello. I'm having a very strange problem with Word 2003. After I press
TAB, my cursor disappears and anything I type does not show up.
However, if I go into Format -- Tabs and select "Clear All" anything
I typed while in that state of not showing up will appear. For
example, after I press TAB my cursor disappears and if I type "gggggg"
it will not show up. But after I "Clear All" in the Tabs section, the
"ggggg" does show up. Furthermore, TAB will then seem to work for a
little while but will soon revert back to not working again. Anyone
have any idea what's going on? I'm trying to write a paper and this is
really frustrating

Default Cursor Disappears and Text Not Displayed After Pressing TAB

Do you perhaps have the default tab stop interval set for 0"? Or is there a
tab stop very near the left margin?

The default tab stop is set for 12.05". And there is no tab stop set
close to the margin.

12.05" is WAY beyond the margin. So when you press TAB, the cursor is well
off the page. You need to reset the default Tabs and make sure that the
changes are saved to your normal.dot (or other template if you are using
something different).

How do I make sure that the changes are saved because it appears that
that is exactly what my problem is--the changes are not being saved.
Also, what should the tab stop be set to?

The default tab stop interval is 0.5". This is set in the Tabs dialog. To
change it for Normal.dot, it appears you'll need to edit Normal.dot directly
(see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...ocNotBlank.htm) since there
doesn't seem to be any Default... button in the Tabs dialog.

If the default interval is not the issue, but in fact you just have a tab
stop at 12.05" set in the Normal style, then you'll need to modify that
style (see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styl...fyAStyle.html), making
sure the change is saved to the template (by checking the "Add to template"
box).

You'll then also need to make sure Normal.dot itself is saved. Ordinarily
this will happen automatically when you close Word, but there are some
add-ins (notably the add-in for Adobe Acrobat 7) that prevent this. If you
have Acrobat 7 installed (not Adobe Reader but the full program, and only
version 7.0, not earlier ones), see the last part of
http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adob...at_toolbar.htm for instructions.
