PowerPoint 2002 How do I resize 1000's of photographs for use in P

Dear All, please can you help in any way, regarding resizing ones photographs
for use on PowerPoint Presentations?

I read some where about importing photographs into ones PowerPoint
Presentation, and that the size of the photograph should be as small as
possible, so ones laptop or presentation doesn't slow down too much with the
effort of large images.
This would apply to me, because I have a well used digital camera, a very
smart and 'new' digital projector and a very old laptop with about a 6GB Hard
Drive.

I have 40,000 or so photographs and are approximately 1.4MB each in size.
I have PowerPoint version 2002

1. Do you know - which would be the best way to reduce the size of my
photographs - through a photo\graphic PC program, or can this be done in
PowerPoint some where?
2. Could I select 'all' of my photographs and transform them all together -
BUT still have my original images un-touched by the process?
3. Can I reduce each picture down to say 100 kbyte and still keep the
quality of the images in tact for a good PP presentation?

You can compress pictures in PowerPoint, but an easier way is available.

Several possible ways to do this ....

1) In PowerPoint use the PhotoAlbum feature under Insert = Picture = New
Photo Album
2) Import Image Wizard -- A very powerful and useful add-in
(http://skp.mvps.org/iiw.htm)

After running either of these, use PowerPoint's native image compression
tool (select an image, then Format = Picture = (tab) Picture = Compress
= (selections) All Pictures, Web resolution, Compress Picts, Delete cropped
areas = OK = OK

3) Use a batch image processor (for example IrfanView -- free download) to
pre compress all images to a reasonable PowerPoint size. Then use one of
the insertion methods (shown here as 1 or 2). Most batch processors will
allow the option of keeping the original images untouched.

I think I'd start by checking the images to see what size they are (mb doesn't
tell us much, it's pixels that tell the story). You want them to match the
screen resolution of your PC (or the pc you're likely to show the image on).

If you download IrfanView (Free: http://www.irfanview.com) you can open images
in it and it'll tell you the size in pixels, among other things. You probably
want them to be 1024x768 or so. If they're larger than that, IrfanView can
batch downsample them to the desired size.

After downsampling to appropriately sized JPGs, you can use the other
suggestions to insert them into PPT.
