No idea. No such updates here. Need accurate information and steps to repro.

I tried backing out the two updates to Outlook that I applied on 1/11 and
that solved my problem also. I should have noted the KB numbers of those
update before I backed them out so that I could include them here, but
didn't. I can track them down if it's not obvious which updates I'm
referring to.

The updates are Security Update KB924085:OUTLOOK and Junk E-mail filter
KB925534:OUTFLTR. Both are for Outlook 2003

Are you running any add-ins in Outlook?

According to Outlook's "Add-In Manager", I am running:
- Google Desktop Search Outlook Addin
- Exchange Extensions property pages (I don't know what this is)
- Fax Server Extension

I also use a program named "ContactsManager" that synchs my Outlook Contacts
with an online addressbook (at WhitePages.com). ContactsManager shows up as
a toolbar within Outlook, but it is not listed in the Add-In Manager, so I
don't know that it's technically an Addin.

Russ:

... My failure mode started a few days ago, just after loading the
following MS updates:
1. Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)
2. Security Update for Outlook 2003 (KB924085)
3. Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830)
4. Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB925534)

From discussions with others, it appears that removing Updates #2 and #4
will solve this problem. However, even though my MS Update History shows
that I successfully downloaded and installed these Updates, I cannot find any
of these particular Updates listed in the Add and Remove Programs section of
my Control Panel. This is very frustrating - any suggestions?

Thanks!

Did you click the Show Updates check box in Add/remove Programs?

Default Outlook Contacts closes when I attempt to open a contact

Sue:

Thanks for your prompt response. I am running Windows XP Professional, and
when I open the Add or Remove Programs category in the Control Panel there
are no boxes of any sort to check. However, there are perhaps 50 or so
Security, Windows and Hotfix updates listed, but not any of these particular
items. I have tried to find these updates by searching elsewhere, namely
the Explorer, but cannot find any reference to Updates there either. This is
really frustrating because so much of my home business information is
contained in my Contacts - which I have been using continuously over the past
2 years or so.

Any further ideas/suggestions?

Thanks!!

Look again at the very top, to the left of the "Sort by" drop-down list. You should see a check box labeled "Show updates." Once you check that box, updates for each installed program will be listed below the program's main entry.

Are you perhaps not logged in as a user with administrator rights?

Sue - thanks again - but the problem remains unresolved.

Yes, I am logged in as a user with administrator rights, and no, there is
really no box labeled "Show Updates" at the very top to the left of the "Sort
By" drop down list. There are no boxes of any type except for the "Sort By"
drop down list. For your reference, I am running MS Office Small Business
Edition 2003 with Outlook 2003 (11.8118.8107).

Have you any other thoughts?

Thanks again for your patience and understanding.
