dcount syntax

Help please. I am trying to count ratings in a report such as:

handout ratings
count total 1s
count total 2s
count total 3s


here is may query:

SELECT workshopID,workshopname, name, dateFrom, dateTo, Contentrating,
Handoutrating, evaluation.[Comments for Content], evaluation.[Comments for
Handout], evaluation.[How may we improve], evaluation.[Describe how it helps]
FROM Lots of tables..
WHERE (((workshop.workshopname)=[workshopname?]));

Please tell me how to do this, i tried a dcount but i am unsure of the syntax.
also is there a select clause also that i need to add to properties in report?
