Outline numbering issue, 3rd level not picking up the section numb
I created a Heading 3 style and applied outline numbering (e.g., 1.1.1) but
when I applied it to a 3rd level heading under section 4.1 of my document, it is numbering it as 1.1.1 not 4.1.1, so it is not picking up the top level section number for some reason. I have tried everything and it's just not working. Now I understand the hatred some people develop for Microsoft products. |

Please see the following article, especially section 2.3 where you create the
Level 2 and 3 etc. from within the Heading 1 dialog box. This will inculde the link to previous levels. http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...Numbering.html Hope this helps DeanH "rbilleaud" wrote: I created a Heading 3 style and applied outline numbering (e.g., 1.1.1) but when I applied it to a 3rd level heading under section 4.1 of my document, it is numbering it as 1.1.1 not 4.1.1, so it is not picking up the top level section number for some reason. The key to outline numbering in Word is to always start from level 1 (as
described in the article that Dean linked to). If all other levels are correct, you may want to delete the contents of the "Number format" box for level 3 and then recreate it, specifying the "Number style," adding previous levels, typing separators, etc. -- Stefan Blom Microsoft Word MVP "DeanH" wrote in message ...
