Default 17 year Word veteran with TOC & Different First Page Footer Issue

I have a document put together this way:
Section 1 - Different First Page section type with a TOC with headers and
footers on the TOC pages, and a Next Page Section Break 4 lines after the end
of the TOC
Section 2 - No Different First Page, non-Same As Previous headers and
footers, and and a Next Page Section Break 4 lines after the end of the text
in the section
Sections 3-10 are set up just like Section 2.

When I update the TOC, it does not ask me anymore if I want to update just
the page numbers or the entire table, and just updates the entire TOC. At
the same time, it changes my Section 1 First Page footer and subsequent
Section 1 page footers into the footer from Section 2 (I lose my i, ii, iii
formatting in the process, ugh). AND my Section Break 4 lines down from the
TOC totally disappears.

What the heck is going on? Is it the type of Section Break that I'm using?
I've never had this happen before!

The symptoms point to a common problem. Although your section break appears
to be four lines down from the TOC, those four lines *and* the section break
are probably inside the TOC field. Alt+F9 to display the field code. Then
press Enter *outside* the field code to make sure you have at least one
paragraph clear below the TOC before inserting the section break. See if
that helps.
