Default Shared Workbooks

I have a gradebook set up in Excel. The files were once shared but currently are not. I tried to set a password for opening the document but it says that the documents is shared when it's not and will only allow me to set a modify password. I have checked my properties for the file and the doc. is not shared. What to do?

I've never seen xl get confused by this.

Do you have [Shared] in the titlebar right next to the workbook name?
Like: book1.xls [Shared]

If you do, then you can turn it off under Tools|Share Workbook.
