Around and around and around we go. Where we stop, nobody knows. Repeating
the same stupid non-answer over and over again is not going to answer my
question. Tonight I'm checking on other manufacturers' "Office" clones. If
I'm going to have to pay again, I'm certainly NOT going to give the money to
Microsoft. I paid for Office and Works, and I'll be damned if I'm going to
pay the non-supportive giant again. I'd rather give the money to someone who
supports their products. I know it's hardly a ripple in Microsoft's budget,
and I have no illusions that my comments here will even get to someone who
works for Microsoft.

Geoff,

You missed a couple of steps: Walk into a room full of volunteers (thinking
they're employees), ask a question, get a rude answer, rephrase the question,
providing more information, get another rude answer, give up on Microsoft
Office, download Open Office from openoffice.org. Live happily ever after.

Milly,

I'm thrilled with it! All I wanted to do was open the work I'd done in
Microsoft's Office, which Microsoft's Works was incapable of doing. Open
Office opens both seamlessly. And it's free. Thanks for all your help!

Geoff,

Frankly I don't care what you think. I'm using Open Office now, and am
thrilled with it. I'm glad that the customer no-service of Microsoft led me
to find an office package that does everything I need and is absolutely free.

I know Jo, it has been a constant theme in this thread.

I dislike aspects of MS myself, but try not to blame them
for my shortcomings, failure to read documentation, and
inability to remain polite.

I am sure that MS is happy as well, and am sure that
openoffice will provide you with all the support you need.

Default Office 2000 upgrade -- can't find qualifying product

Geoff,

I read all the documentation, including the Knowledge Base article I copied
into this thread. It clearly states that there is a fix and that technical
support has that fix. Nowhere does it say I'd have to pay for the fix. I
own a legally purchased copy of all the software involved, but because of a
hard drive failure I had to reinstall the software. Microsoft has failed to
support its own software, and has failed to live up to the promises of their
own Knowledge Base.

I came here for information, and find myself surrounded by dense
(intentionally or unintentionally) Microsoft cheerleaders who would rather
berate a user than offer help. Their only reply to any question seems to be
to pay Microsoft and shut up. Well, I'm choosing to shut up now.

It was childish of me to respond in kind to Millie's nasty response to my
original post. I apologize for falling to her level. This conversation has
gone from useless to incredibly annoying, so I think I'll bow out now.

Since you searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base, I am sure you found this
article as well:
