new message contacts pop-up

When I type the first letter only old, deleted contacts show up. The recently
used ones don't. How do I stop the old ones from showing up and get the ones
I use frequently to show up? Ex.: I type "s" looking for Sam Good. Only
contacts that no longer exist in my contact list show up, even though I
emailed Sam earlier in the day and have not used the other contacts for over
a year.

Unclear post. You neglected to state _where_ you are typing and whether you
are using autocompletion or one of Outlook's various Search functions.
Typing in the To: field uses autocompletion which has nothing whatsoever to
do with your Contacts.

I'm sorry I didn't make that clear. This occurs when I am entering a contact in the "to" area for a new message in Outlook 2007. A drop down box appears with suggested names. Until last week the drop down box listed current contacts from my address book that begin with the first letter I type. Now the only suggested contacts that appear are contacts deleted from my address book a long time ago.

Wrong. Autocompletion never used your Contacts Folder (or what you
incorrectly call your "address book"). It uses a cache of addresses from
your previously sent messages.
You appear to have a corrupted connection to this cache. Autocompletion is
not a robust or reliable feature. It frequently stops working usually
because Outlook loses its connection to its autocompletion cache. This can
happen for a number of reasons, most often because Outlook is not exiting
completely and thus not writing to the cache. Make sure you run no add-ins
or sync software that might hold Outlook open after you exit. After you find
and resolve the problem that is preventing Outlook from exiting properly,
you may need to create a new Outlook profile to get autocompletion to work
again. If you're lucky you'll be able to migrate your old cache to the new
profile following directions he
