I receive messages from a friend who subscribes to aol. Apparently, aol automatically zips
attachments. So I need to unzip them manually. If I right click on the attachment it will
unzip to "C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\JOP0J7HN\Jeff peppers.zip" (the most recent one.). This is another cute
little joke on MS' part. Your favorite software company is notorious for hiding things in
obscure places.

Questions: 1. How to change the default location for unzipped files?
2. Is there an add-on or utility that will, at one stroke, unzip the
contents and append the results to the email, as though that was how it was sent?

Hey, just because you don't understand something doesn't make it
obscure. You've merely come across one of the many uses of Temporary
Internet Files.

If you want to use your own decompression program, just save the
attachment to your hard disk.

AOL doesn't zip an attachment by default. The sender must be doing that.
However, AOL forces the user to forward messages as attachments which can
result in having to open the attachment the same number of times that it was
forwarded before you finally see the attachment.

What utility are you using to Unzip the files?

If you are using the Windows XP built-in unzipping, when you open the
zip file it opens as a folder view. From there you can open the files
by just double clicking them. If you want to save them somewhere, you
can drag-and-drop the files where you like.

If you are using some other utility, then you'll need to look at its
options for where it unzips to.

As for your second question, I know of no such utility. OE doesn't
support modifying received messages.

Guys, thanks for the input.

Ted, the horror of it is I do understand it. And, sure, I can and do save to my Down
directory and then unpack. But I have to really want to see it to make all that heavy
lifting worth while.

Bruce, Carl (my correspondent) runs a Mac. He swears AOL automatically zips and unzips. As
I understand Macs about as well as I understand quantum dynamics of higher dimensions and
AOL even less, I can't argue with him. Even if I don't believe it. Yeah, it's fun to click
down to the original poster, 6 generations back.

Michael, I let Windows do the unzipping. I know it opens as a folder. My whine is about
the location of the folder. If I save the zip to my Down directory then I use Total
Commander to look at it, open it, save the contents, whatever. That's where 2 file windows
really helps.
