Default How do I register Word for Office xp when the wizard won't work?

I got a new hard drive, installed Office xp from my CD and ignored the
registration wizard for a few days. Now it won't initialize the wizard. How
do I register now? Do I have to reinstall the product?

The activation wizard shall start when you start Word for instance. If it
doesnt what error message do you get? If it does appear, follow the
instructions. However, it is possible that you've reached the maximum
activation limit. In that case, choose the phone activation method and
explain the situation to the operator.

I believe I have reached the maximum. If I just reinstall (to avoid having
to call on the phone and waiting endlessly) will that allow me to register
without ruining any of my documents? If you don't recommend reinstalling,
would you please point me to the (dreaded) phone number?

I forgot to answer your question -- the activization wizard simply freezes
(no error message).

Sorry, one more thing I just noticed as I tried it again -- when the
activization wizard begins, my Norton anti-virus software says it has
detected and eliminated a virus (Trojan.startpage). At first I thought this
was a coincidence -- could it be interfering with the registration wizard?

At which stage? Does it display that it failed to activate? does it freeze
at the "Connecting" stage if you select Internet activation?
Thanks

I discovered the problem. I have a IE browser hijacker which I cannot
completely get rid of. I have both the Lavasoft Ad Aware and Spybot Search
and Destroy software. I ran the software, and was able to use the wizard in
office. Evidently the wizard uses IE to connect to the internet. In the
meantime, I have tried to get rid of the browser hijacker permanently and
cannot (everytime I reboot the computer the virus is restored, despite the
fact that I do not have the "restore settings" selected). Since this is a
security problem, I called the Microsoft security phone line but (after an
hour and a half) were not able to help me . I guess the only fixes the
support person knew about were the two programs I already mentioned and he
did not understand why they did not remove the registries for good. He has
said someone will contact me in three to four days. I have been using
Mozilla since the browser hijacker first appeared and I guess I will simply
have to run the two anti-spyware programs everytime I reboot if I don't want
it to affect other Microsoft programs may automatically call up IE. It is
quite frustrating. If you can point me to further fixes on this issue, I'd
appreciate it. In any case, I am grateful for you quick response to my
initial inquiry. Thank you very much!
