Windows programs should allow copy and paste of error messages

I believe all error messages from any office program or any windows program
should allow a simple copy and paste of the error message. This would allow
easy Google search for information on errors or other easy research.

Many error messages are long and cryptic. If they were easy to cut and
paste there would be more information posted to resolve them and ACTUAL exact
error messages could be posted and reviewed.

Some only allow a screen capture, and because the window showing the error
is a ixed size, the entire eror message cannot be captured. Others (a few)
do not activate the text capture feature within the window.
This has frusrated me when the error has a long key name or a hex data
string.

This occurs with some system level errors, and some applications (Non MS
usually)

Milly was right. Apparently using shortcut keys CTRL+C I was able to capture
the following error concerning an expired certificate:

This is not intuitive since I could not highlight the error message with the
mouse before copying it. Never-the-less CTRL+C captures the message.

I tried Bob’s suggestion for the “Event Viewer�. It does not contain the
error message. Just to be sure I cleared all logs in the event viewer and
intentionally induced the error message again. NOPE… the error message was
not contained in any error logs.

I have learned something that I will always remember… Try CTRL+C to capture
errors. I would amend my suggestion to Microsoft to make error message to
allow the error message to be selected with the mouse before performing the
copy function. That is more in line with expected behavior for Windows copy
and paste.
