Default ColourMaps for the World and Regions

Hi,

I have a task that I do not know where to start.

I need to colour different countries depending on the view: Population,
GNP, km^2 and a few more views. I will then show this on a World map or
on Regional maps: Asia, Europe, Africa, South America, Middle East, ...
(I have them as Drawing objects-freeforms).
The colours scales and the intevalls needs to be optional, depending on
the view (population, GNP, ...), but not depending on the map.

So I thought; I have one sheet with all the data, the intervalls and
the colours. I have each map on separate sheets. I start to Select
view: Population, GNP,... and I then Select the Map and then hit a
button.
If it looks good, I'm done but, If the colours don't look good I need
to change them, and If the intervalls are too big I need to change
them.

I use Win2000 and XL2002, so no map utility :-). And I would be happy
for any examples, where to start.

- If this works fine, I will also include captial cities. -

I've never used it, but Excel 97 came with a map utility, and I suspect
Excel 2000 also did. For later versions, Microsoft has MapPoint, which
costs extra. My sources tell me that the map utility from earlier Excel
versions can be used in newer Excel versions. There is likely to be some
effort to get the newer version to recognize the map utility.
