It should be able to appear then. Didn't work........so I created a new folder and went into Windows Explorer and added the Quick Launch one......however, it is over to the right and I can't yank it back to beside Start......my programs are opening between Start and Quick Launch now. Just removed a photo editing update from HP that I put on last night and did a System Restore once more.....back another few hours. Probably that program was at fault. Dunno...... I will have to have a good look at Windows Explorer tomorrow. I put the Application Data folder in sort of the wrong place.......so have duplicates under that. But I will see which Identity is being used for OE and delete the others. (2 of my new identity.....2 of the old corrupt one). Just call me "Murphy"......if anything could go wrong.....etc. I'd say you've got something messed up with the Application Data folder. Permissions as well maybe. |

The one I found in Applog (just below it I guess) was a hidden folder.......I dragged it over to the heading "Application Data", but it settled in as a subfolder to that one. Not sure where I am going with this, but it is baffling. Must have somehow put it into the Applog folder, but have no memory of doing that. Reinstalled Firefox.....it wiped all of the settings and data out of that too. (not sure what "it" is/was) Uninstalled the Photo Impressions by HP....found all the bits and pieces for OE.....so everything is working semi-OK for the moment. Cheers.....Heather |

Thanks, Gene......I did all of that. Btw....I am using WinME, so the XP
folder names are different than mine. Got the address book back......albeit an older one, so weeded a lot out of it. Showed up in a few places.......but the one I imported was from Majik's OE Backup program. Cheers.....Heather "Gene K" wrote in message ... Heather, I am late to this discussion; however, I will offer this as part of the address book discussion: a.Your address book normally should appear at: X:\Documents and Settings\Xxxx\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book [replace the first "X" with the drive letter on which Windows is installed. Replace "Xxxx" with the proper user name]. b.You can find all address books on your computer by using the Start/Search function. Open it up: All Files and Folders/type "*.wab" (minus the quote markers)/look in the Hard Drive on which Windows is installed/More Advanced Options, BE CERTAIN that the first three options contain check marks/left click "Search". Just call me "Murphy"......if anything could go wrong.....etc. Night Majik.....heading off to bed. You get working on that OE Backup, OK?? (VBG) Cheers.....Heather Figure I will get an 80 gig HD and the tech can put the blasted XP on....and dual boot with WinME. $100 for the HD and $60 for the tech. Not bad.....but having you do it for free would be lovely....chuckle. Hey, it's snowing today....want to come up for a visit?? Dual boot is okay, you can still share OE's files that way. It was cold enough for snow today here it felt like. Blasted wind..... I looked at the OEBackup code the other day. First time in a while and almost did something in it. I'm just stuck where I can't think and I get frustrated and close it out. There's a lot of stuff in that program and some no one can use because I disabled it. Maybe I'll get back to it shortly and pretty it up some. Keep waking up with some ideas on how to accomplish a couple of other things which would be helpful. I hope you get back to it....I had a problem using it coz I still have that old Identity on here.....so went to the Quickie one. Think I better get rid of the corrupt identity......and I now have two sets of these folders and files. I will ponder on it and remove some of them. But will do another quickie backup as a just in case. Yeah, a corrupt Identity can cause problems and not just with OEB. You should have to see how many cow paths I have to drive down in code to make sure I have all the possibilities there for the program to just begin to run.......Regular set up Identity, No Identities subkey at all, an Identity started but not finished (no subkeys), Identity partially started, (some subkeys), and a host of others. Then onward with the other checks such as which OS is running, where are the files located, what are all the Identities and their paths. Do certain values exist?, etc.......Then the program shows up on the screen eventually. I looked one time and there were about 500 lines of code to do just the basic start up. I think the whole program is over 100,000 lines and about 20 forms. Basically it's just another way to kick one's self in the rear trying to go thru it. |

Cheers.....Heather The one thing I'm curious about is this. Why the dragging and dropping of folders? Do this, create a new user account in XP. Switch to it. All programs will be there but you will have to set up OE and import the mail and address book. When you get it done, switch back to the old account. Create a folder where you can put all the documents, data, etc into. Give it a name of C:\Data Right click on the folder, select Properties Click on Sharing tab Select Share this folder. Click on Permissions button Change it to Full Control. Click OK Now move all the documents and data into this folder. When done, log out of that account. Log into new account. Start fresh. Sound like worth doing? |

"DGuess" wrote in message ... The one thing I'm curious about is this. Why the dragging and dropping of folders? Well, I didn't think it belonged in Applog.....and it was a *hidden folder*.....and OE had absolutely nothing in it but the usual default folders (Inbox, Sent, etc). I had done a search for *.dbx files and they were showing up as C:\WINDOWS\APPLOG\Application Data......so that was the reason for my trying to move it out and over to the Folder named Application Data.......am I confusing you? (g) Do this, create a new user account in XP. Switch to it. All programs will be there but you will have to set up OE and import the mail and address book. Did that last night with the contents of the above dragged folder. Had a problem importing the *.wab file......but finally found an old one in your program and used that. It just plain would NOT import from the usual Internet Explorer spot. Besides, it was only 173 kb......so no names in it. I will print off your instructions and muse on it. I would just like to sort out what belongs where under Application Data, so figured I would wait a day or two and watch the date changes (or lack thereof). I don't have duplicates of everything......but I also have the added confusion of a lot of XP folders on this HD which I am not entirely sure I can remove. I know.....a reformat is in order, but you know how Martha would feel at the word *reformat*.....grin. Best.....Heather When you get it done, switch back to the old account. On rereading this.......remember, I have WinME.....is this an XP solve??
*Permissions* seems a bit strange, not to mention I can't find that, so I thought I had better ask. The Dinosaur. "DGuess" wrote in message ... Do this, create a new user account in XP. Switch to it. I thought you had upgraded to XP a while back. So basically we're playing tennis with a basketball. Just ain't working out. What did Tools | Options | Maintenance tab | Store Folders show for the OE message stores? If it was the Applog folder, somehow it was moved to it but then, that's WinMe and could have been there. I don't have that installed on anything around here. |

Go into Tools | Options | Maintenace tab | Store Folders button. What location dos it show for there? On XP, one of the first things I do for my own messages is to move it to a folder such as C:\Msgs or C:\Mail and use it. Sure makes life a lot easier. I don't have duplicates of everything......but I also have the added confusion of a lot of XP folders on this HD which I am not entirely sure I can remove. Move on down here to the Bluegrass and I'll come and pick it up and fix it G |

I thought you had upgraded to XP a while back. So basically we're playing tennis with a basketball. Just ain't working out. TOTAL DISASTER!! Spent 24 hours with a constantly crashing XP and I followed all the directions to the nth degree!! Took 9 tries to get it installed coz it was almost completely installed when it kept reverting back to "installing devices" or some such.....and then brief black screens. Had to go forward....couldn't go back coz ME was not there. Long story short......uninstalled XP, but it left a ****load of XP folders and files on the WinME hard drive......been slowly removing them, but this seems to be another twist in the ME/XP saga......no clue as to how it happened. What did Tools | Options | Maintenance tab | Store Folders show for the OE message stores? If it was the Applog folder, somehow it was moved to it but then, that's WinMe and could have been there. I don't have that installed on anything around here. Nope....it is now the Casey Identity that I was using before......never thought to check that when I had nothing on here. This is getting way too involved and messy. I think my best bet is to get the local tech to put XP on a new HD and take the data off WinME as I need it and then eventually reformat it.....if that is possible. Most of it is backed up except for the odd new thing......will do that backup as well. Working OK now.....but still no Quick Launch and I have given up on that. About to defrag and see if that helps. System Restored 3 times.....back to last Thursday....didn't help. Blasted computers!! OTOH, I am your best *victim*.....if it is something weird, it always happens to me, grin!! Is there any hardware that didn't pass the XP Compability test? BIOS update, etc? I just upgraded a computer for a lady that M goes to church with from WinMe to XP and had no problems. Well, there were some but I updated things in WinMe first and also removed all the spyware, etc. After that, the upgrade to XP Home went fine. Never had a problem installing XP on anything so far and I've done quite a few upgrades. Any hardware that was suspect, I pulled first then did the install. Have to use Drivers.com a lot at times. Now I know why I never cared for WinMe. |
