Default Include Body Text on Same Line As Heading and Have Only Heading Appear in TOC

Hello -

We are using Word 2000 and have generated outline numbered styles that
have bold or underlined heading text immediately followed by paragraph
text on the same line. In order to only include the heading in the TOC
we use the hidden paragraph mark technique.

In an effort to help the user, we changed the font color of the hidden
paragraph marks to red to indicate they were hidden, etc. This
technique worked fine when we applied the color to the hidden
paragraph mark inserted after a heading that was not linked to an
outline number level. When the outline number level was linked to the
heading - the number would also turn red along with the hidden
paragraph mark. Is there a way I can prevent the number from turning
red and still change the color of the paragraph mark to red?

Many thanks in advance.

I don't think so. Numbering usually reflects the formatting of the paragraph
mark (with the fortunate exception of Hidden formatting).

With the cursor on your first level heading style, go to the Customize
Outline Numbered List dialog via Modify Format Numbering
Customize.

For each level you're using, click the Font button and make the color
setting Automatic. That will guarantee that the numbers don't pick up
the hidden paragraph marks' color.
