What's backing up my folders?
From time to time, something makes backup copies of all my OE folders and
puts them in the recycle bin: inbox.bak, sent.bak, deleted items.bak, etc. What's doing this? Can I turn it off? Bobbi |

Can I turn it off? Bobbi When your email program compacts the folder, or when you do, the computer now makes a backup copy of the DBX files prior to the compact operation. If the compacting goes okay, the computer deletes the backup copy. Hence the various ".bak" files you your recycle bin. This was part of the Windows Critical Update # KB923694. If you delete that Update (see add/Remove programs) you will no longer get these files deleted. However, this update fixed several other problems as well and you lose those fixes too. The backup was considered critical because the compact operation was causing lost emails. This fix allows you to recover the email. I just learned to live with it and empty the recycle bin more often. |

What's backing up my folders?
This is due to a recent OE update, (KB923694). Now when you compact, a copy
of your dbx files are sent to the Recycle Bin in the event that something should go wrong and messages, or entire folders, are lost when you are compacting. Many people do not back up Outlook Express on a regular basis. This new mandatory backup is something people have been asking for quite awhile as we spend a lot of time helping people getting their messages back, and they have to purchase a tool to recover messages. You can empty the Recycle Bin any time you want and the bak files will go away until you compact again. For more info, see the information outlined in red he www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2 If you don't currently back up OE regularly, I would suggest you get this, or a similar tool, (freeware): This freeware tool backs up everything in OE in seconds. Disregard what is written in red. That is referring to a different program.
