Default scanning photos

When I first scanned a photo on my scanner in word in custom scanning it
turned out perfect. It scanned and the photo went directly to my screen in
word and the color was perfect. When I scanned the second time and used the
same settings my photo came out with hardly with any color at all. Help
please....
