Default slide shows goes dead

I've just written a presentation on a computer running
office 2000. The individual slides are all saved as a
presentation but when I try to launch the slide show, the
screen goes black and the computer becomes catatonic - I
can't even get the task manager to pick up. nada, zero
response. What's going on?
