Symbols

I am trying to put in a cell "30Û« ~35Û« " but when I do it switches the 35Û« to
53Û«. I have tried the cell format on "general" and "text" as well as the
"number" but they all do this. Why is it doing this and how can I stop it?

As I asked yesterday, how are you inputting the symbols (degree symbol)?

Sorry Im just learning how to use this web site. To put the degree symbol in
am going to "Insert Symbol" and then inserting it to the text. The excel
version that I am using is Microsoft Office Excel 2003.

Try this
30°~35°

and see whether it works...

In Insert Symbol look for degree sign (ASCII 176)

Pl. look for the character code (ASCII value) and name of the symbol you
are inserting and let us know...

You are inserting the symbol in the appropriate spot in the formula bar
after hitting F2 to edit?

Should work OK.

Have you checked your Autocorrect list for entries that would change 35°
degrees to 53°?

What happens if you just enter 35 then insert a symbol or type 35 then Alt +
0176 on the Numpad?

Gord,

Try to copy the values posted by Crissy (excluding the quotes) and paste in
any cell... you will see what happens...

I suspect it is due to the code of the degree symbol being inserted (not the
one I inserted successfully)...

I am not sure why but I could replicate what by copying and pasting... I
have copied it below

I copied your 30? - 35? and have no changes made when pasted.

I also copied Crissy's original sample but could not get a change so for me
"you will see what happens" is nothing.

Did you mean to post 30° - 35°

Which also pastes with no changes.

I forgot to mention that I am using a browser...IE and Firefox
and copying what Crissy has posted...
take what is between the quotes...

There's something very odd about your data.

When I paste from the web version of this NG into Excel 2007, I see the same
problem as you do.

But it seems as if it is a display problem.

1. Your degree sign does not look the same as mine. The circle is smaller,
and the line is "thinner"

2. If I edit within the cell, the cursor moves in a peculiar fashion.

I don't have a "degree symbol" under Insert/Special characters.

It seems there is something "special" about whatever degree symbol it is that
you are using, that messes up the display.

I would suggest entering your data as follows:

Select the cell.

Enter the following key strokes:

But note that when I write alt0176 that means to
hold down the alt key
while holding down the alt key, sequentially type 0176 on the
***numeric keypad*** (not on the numbers above the regular keyboard).
