Default Lost cause and waste of time...

I submitted my question hoping to be directed to someone
where my case could be heard and maybe resolved...

Instead I was told:

1. I could not load on a second machine (I already know
this and it was not the question).
2. I was told to "get an updated virus checker and told
to keep it updated!!!!" (I already know this and it was
not the question).
3. I was told she has "not been forced to reformat in 4
years !!" well good for her, I dont really care and not
the question.
I came to the website looking for answers... I really
dont know who any of you are... or what an MVP is...

The cap does not fit and and I do not feel guilt, I
simply wish to obtain a lost registration key prior to
reformating my HD and loose my existing capability,
without being accused of "violating the EULA" !!
If you or anyone can direct me to a contact at microsoft
that could hear my case.. I would appreciate it.

Default Lost cause and waste of time...

You've posted your question to a newsgroup manned by volunteers. Depending
on how you located the group, you may not have read that part.

1. Your original post was confusing. You said "I have the original cd...
even have it loaded on one machine." That sounds as you if wanted to load
it on another system, otherwise you might have said "even have it loaded on
that machie already". I know, not the question.

2. Yes, I did recommend you get a good antivirus and keep it current. You
said "because of recent viruses and the age of the
machine 18 months now... I want to reformat and reinstall everything again".
I will grant you that at that point I should have realized that you were
talking about the same system in the first sentence HOWEVER the issue is the
virus thing. If you didn't have virus problems, you wouldn't have stated
that as a reason to reformat. Wanting to get rid of old files, clean things
up, etc is a valid reason to reformat. So is getting rid of viruses. I run
AVG and have never had any virus issues because I make sure the database is
current. I know, not the question.

3. I made an observation that was true - I didn't have to reformat in four
years. My point was that just because a system is "older" doesn't mean you
have to reformat. I know, not the question.

4. You came for an answer and I was giving you some facts that you may not
have known. A lot of people are under the mistaken idea that since the
software came on their computer, they can do whatever they want with it -
after all, they own it. If they'd ever read the EULA, they would know that
they don't "own" Microsoft software.

You were able to find the newsgroup, maybe thru the MS website. Did you
search the Support options? Try:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...ffer38a&sd=MVP

You will see that Microsoft offers unlimited installation support at no
charge. You will have to pay for the toll phone charges but they are not the
type to dilly-dally around just to run up your phone bill. They have more
than enough to keep them busy.

Default JoAnn - thank you for your followup...

JoAnn Paules

I am sorry to have troubled you, I expected an actual MS
online agent to respond on a Microsoft website, not
volunteers, my mistake, I am sorry... Your response to me
was to state facts that I already knew, or were not
relevant. In the future I think it would be better if you
know of a solution ie phone number provide it.. -or- ask
for more details if you do not understand a post.

I am well aware of the terms of the EULA, well aware of
virus protection (I also use AVG... from Grisoft). and I
do not have a virus problem, AVG is pretty good... but I
still like to reformat... I have been using computers
since the osborne, built several, and was installing 128k
memory upgrades and floppy drives in PC Jrs back in 1985.
I couldnt wait to get my hands on the PC-XP when it came
out. I remember using dos 2.1 before viruses... so being
told "to use a virus detector and keep it updated!!!" was
a little insulting.. I am not a novice, which is probably
why I lost the reg key anyway, (its in a box somewhere) I
have owned windows 2.0,3.1,95,98,98r2,2000,ME,xp, and
thats just operating software... 3 versions of office,
several upgrades of each software AND ALL original CDs
So someone implying that my "conscience pricking you,
perchance...?" doesnt even deserve a reply...

I do wish it was easier to keep track of all the license
#s... I thank everyone for their suggestions, including
Johns article which I will go read... Good night and
thanks to all...

This is a Microsoft "Online Community" (or "newsgroup") - some are monitored
by MS personnel, most aren't (in my experience). This is spelled out in the
FAQ (or was, last time I checked)

Your response to me
was to state facts that I already knew, or were not
relevant.

a) If she hadn't stated the things and you didn't know them, then you
wouldn't now.
b) This is a newsgroup. People say things that are irrelevant (and
sometimes things that downright don't make sense)

-or- ask
for more details if you do not understand a post.

It's not a case of not understanding, it's a case of misunderstanding.
Say, for example, you walk into a Swahili restaurant, and the waiter starts
speaking Swahili to you. In the most part, you wouldn't understand a word
they were saying, and it wouldn't sound recognisable, and you would ask for
clarification as you didn't understand.
If, however, there was a particular Swahili phrase that translated as "Can I
take your order, sir?", and it sounded phonetically identical to the English
phrase "Your mother is a stupid prostitute", and they said that to you, then
you would get rather annoyed, and posisbly shout, smack them across the face
with a wooden plank, or walk out of the restaurant. You wouldn't think that
you had not understood, even though you misunderstood.

I am well aware of the terms of the EULA, well aware of
virus protection (I also use AVG... from Grisoft). and I
do not have a virus problem, AVG is pretty good...

Do you update your virus definitions regularly (Every day? Every couple of
days? Every couple of weeks?)
Also, you might want to run an Adware scanner such as the free version of
Ad-Aware from www.lavasoftusa.com - this detects "spyware" and "adware" that
is installed on your machine when you visit some websites or install some
software, which can slow down your machine, display ads on your machine, or
(sometimes) spy on your machine and what you do with it.

but I
still like to reformat...

That's your choice and you're free to take it.

I have been using computers
since the osborne, built several, and was installing 128k
memory upgrades and floppy drives in PC Jrs back in 1985.

That's nice. So you've been working with computers since before I was born
:-)

I couldnt wait to get my hands on the PC-XP when it came
out.

What is the "PC-XP"? Do you mean Microsoft's Windows XP operating system?
Or is this some antique machine I've never heard of?

I remember using dos 2.1 before viruses... so being
told "to use a virus detector and keep it updated!!!" was
a little insulting..

a) JoAnn didn't know this
b) If you have been running since before viruses existed, then you might not
have realised the importance of a good virus scanner.

I am not a novice, which is probably
why I lost the reg key anyway, (its in a box somewhere)

JoAnn didn't know you were not a novice. Many of the users who post here
are novices, and many novice users don't even know that it is illegal to
install Publisher on more than 2 PCs (one desktop and one notebook, which
are not in concurrent use).
Treating a user as a novice until you have evidence to the contrary does
little harm, and more good (it often avoids a lot of confusion)

I
have owned windows 2.0,3.1,95,98,98r2,2000,ME,xp, and
thats just operating software...

That's nice. I wasn't around for 2.0, I skipped 2000 and never got ME
because it was so awful.

3 versions of office,

Only 3? I have used 5, and have had 4 installed (Office 97, 2000, XP and
2003)

several upgrades of each software AND ALL original CDs

But do you keep them in their original cases? If not, then do you read the
back of the case when you remove them to store them elsewhere?

I do wish it was easier to keep track of all the license
#s...

Yes, but in this age where most everyone wants something for nothing,
manufacturers have to be more and more able to prevent unauthorised
installations of their software.

I thank everyone for their suggestions, including
Johns article which I will go read...

Good luck and I hope you sort out your problem

You mean you don't carry a wooden plank around with you in your Toolkit,
