Default lost registration key...

I have the original cd... even have it loaded on one
machine.... because of recent viruses and the age of the
machine 18 months now... I want to reformat and reinstall
everything again... I have Publisher 2000 but cant seem
to locate the right registration key ... in fact even
when I view the PID in the "about" window it gives me a
number but the MS tech support online questionaire says
it is invalid... I want to reformat but I need a valid
key # I have several shelves full of software and lots of
key numbers but none seem to be the correct one. Its
confusing... need a better way to manage this... I use
office mostly but I need Publiser for a few projects.

Wait - if it's already loaded on one machine, you can't install it on
another unless it's a laptop. If your copy of Publisher is an OEM version
you can't even do that.

Plus, I strongly recommend you get a good antivirus program and KEEP IT
CURRENT!!! (I loved your comment about the age of the machine. Mine's four
years old and I don't have viruses and other problems that force me to
reformat. I did it last year because we went broadband and the wireless
modem/router combo didn't like Win 98.)

JoAnn,

He wants to "reformat and reinstall" not install on a second machine.
That's legal.

I see that now but his original comment was "I have the original cd... even
have it loaded on one machine". That makdes it sound like it's already
loaded on one system and now he wants to install it on another. That
probably isn't legal. (He didn't say anything about whether it was a desktop
or laptop, nor did he say, in his original post, whether it was a full
version or an OEM.) We see too many posts from people who think that once
they buy software they can install it on as many systems as they can -
legally.

Unfortunately, tone of voice doesn't translate well online. My response
wasn't a "WAIT!!! YOU CAN'T DO THAT!!!" It was a "Before you do this,
there's something you need to know and you haven't given us enough
information."

Using Pub 2000 here and to help you find your Product Key, it looks like a
Windows ProductKey, 5 groups of 5 alphanumeric characters. This should make
it nearly unique in the list of reg and product keys on your list.

Load and run Belarc advisor http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html Might
be worth a try! If it was installed as part of Office it will come up as
Office disk 2.

That's a no go, Frosty.

Publisher 2000 does not record the Product Key on the hard drive, just the
Product ID.
