Let's say y is in A1. In B1: =3*A1. In C1: =A1+1
In D1: =B1-C1
Select D1. ToolsGoal seek. Set cell should be D1,
in To Value enter 0, By Changing cell : A1

thanks for your help,

however when we follow your instructions it comes up with the following
error, "formula in cell must result in a number" is it actually possible
to find y? e.g.

3Y=Y+1
2Y=1
Y=0.5

Can excel tell us that y is 0.5 in this example?

If you mail me your email address I'll send you the sheet that I tested and
that indeed found y = 0.5
