What is meant by ctrl+w command?

When I use this command my active page get closed. But this short key is not
listed in front of close options?

Look in the Customize Keyboard dialog box; you should see that Ctrl+W
is assigned to the DocClose command (along with Ctrl+F4).

To access the Customize Keyboard dialog box, you can choose Tools |
Customize, and then click the Keyboard button.

A couple of points to add:
1. Look in the help topic "Keyboard Shortcuts for Microsoft Office Word" to
find keyboard shortcuts for the various commands you can perform in Word. Do
the
following to locate this topic.
a. Click on the help icon at the right side of the menu bar.
b. Type "Keyboard Shortcuts Word" in the search textbox in the help window.
The topic is near the top of the results list.

2. In Word 2007, you can access Customize Keyboard dialog box with the
following:
a. Click the down arrow at the right end of the Quick Access Toolbar.
b. Choose More Commands...

Note: This dialog box is where you need to go if you want to create or
re-assign
a keyboard shortcut for a specific command or macro.

I mistakenly used the CTRL+W command and my document automatically closed
without giving me the option to save any changes, is there any way to
retrieve the document? I am in the middle of writing a thesis and have just
lost four hours work!!!!!

You worked on a document for four hours without saving it even once???

Even if you were that negligent, Ctrl+W does not unconditionally close a
document that contains unsaved changes; it displays the standard "do you want to
save" message. Are you sure you didn't hit "No" in that message?

Your document is probably somewhere on your disk, although it may not have a
file name that you expect. Try using the Windows search command (Windows key +
F) to look for files that contain some phrase you know is in your document.

I know, I know I know...... I was convinced I HAD saved it, but don't appear
to have done so....believe me an expensive lesson has been well and truly
learned :0( I consider my wrists well & truly slapped!! Needless to say I
will try and use the tactic you suggested and pray it is somewhere else. I
thought it strange that I didn't 'see' a prompt to save but then it all
happened so quickly I can't be sure - as you say Jay I may well have hit No
without actually realising it. Thanks for your help on this I will give it a
go.

If you feel that you don't remember to save the document often then
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Save tab.
Check the Allow background saves check box

Unfortunately, that option has nothing at all to do with saving backups. See
