Default page setup, paragraph, and styles and formatting

I don't understand the relations between these three. Even tho I set rt and lft margins in page setup, when I type I get different margins in paragraph settings. Font size also seems to influence margin settings. Neither of my two manuels addresses the relationship between the three. One way to get what I want requires that I first hit return, moving the cursor down, then backspace, before typing.

Default page setup, paragraph, and styles and formatting

Page setup controls the margins for the section (whole document unless there
are multiple sections).

Paragraph formatting controls paragraph indents which are set based on the
page margins but can be inside or outside of the margins. In addition to the
left and right indents, paragraph formatting can (and usually should)
include space before or space after settings which in some ways act as top
and bottom margins for the paragraph. The best place to control paragraph
formatting is from within the style being applied to the paragraph.

See http://addbalance.com/usersguide/basic_formatting.htm and
