Default Word 2003 file size and graphics

Why is that when I paste a 600k bmp picture to a blank document, the file
size jumps to over 3mb? Fast saves is off, there is no text, versions is off.
Tried the "compress" function both at 96dpi and 200dpi with no change in file
size noted.

I suspect that Word converts the graphic into a different format when it imports it, which is a different size than the original.
