Post Net Bar Code, office 2007
Microsoft took out the capability in Word 2007 (except by a round about
process) of printing a postal bar code on Envelopes. Is there a free or inexpensive add-in I can use to do this? |

According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/897290, "the USPS does not accept bulk mail that has address labels that contain POSTNET bar codes that are generated by Word. These bulk mailings no longer qualify for a bulk mailing discount." Unless you have the mail volume needed to get the discount, and the software to produce correct bar codes, it isn't worth trying. -- Regards, Jay Freedman Microsoft Word MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org Email cannot be acknowledged; please post all follow-ups to the newsgroup so all may benefit. |

Umm... that's an inadequate reason to remove the feature, because people use bar codes for more than to get a bulk mailing discount. Mail with bar codes reputedly arrives at its destination faster, because it can be more easily sorted by computer.

Thanks for the answer....
I am simply looking for a way to put a bar code on the envelope as in Word 2007. I am not a bulk mailer. I can do it, but the required procedure takes too long.... The BARCODE field still works in Word 2007, the same as in Word 2003
and earlier. All that was removed was the check box in the Envelopes and Labels dialog for adding it automatically; now you have to do it manually. The Help topic about the field is available online at http://office.microsoft.com/assistan...&respos=1&rt=2 The fact remains that the Post Office won't make any use of the PostNet barcode generated by this field because it's obsolete, and putting it on your envelopes might actually make your mail take longer to arrive if they have to reprocess it manually. -- Regards, Jay Freedman Microsoft Word MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org Email cannot be acknowledged; please post all follow-ups to the newsgroup so all may benefit. I have an AutoText mergefield in Word 2000 that still works in Word 2007. The
mergefield code is: { BARCODE \u "type zip code here" \* MERGEFORMAT }. I called it ZIPBARCODE. Whenever I want to use it, I type ZIP and then press F3 to drop the code into my document/envelope. SHIFT+F9 opens the code and I replace "type zip code here" with the pertinent ZIPcode ("XXXX"), then press SHIFT-F9 again to close the code. As I say, it still works in Word 2007. You have not been following the thread - the postnet bar code can still be
created, but there is no point doing so because it is no longer accepted as a valid bar code by the postal service. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org gr8auntieokie wrote: I have an AutoText mergefield in Word 2000 that still works in Word 2007.
