How do I disable the Mail Navigation Pane

I have NOT configured an email account in Outlook (we use a different email
client here at work).

At this point the ONLY thing in my navigation bar is Contacts, Calender and
Tasks. (Which I use primarily for the ability to sync to my mobile devices).

However, when I start Outlook it still shows the Mail section of the
Navigation Pane.

At the bottom of the nav pane, click the double right arrow button, then Add
or Remove Buttons. Toggle the Mail button to the Off state.

is it starting in mail? you can set it to start in any folder- tools
options, other tab, advanced button, look at the top.

I have that set to Outlook Today. Which I like because it gives me an
overview of my Calender and my Tasks.

Again the symptoms are launch Outlook (with no configured email accounts).
In the middle I see Outlook Today. To the Left I see the Mail Pane. Below the
Mail Pane are the three buttons for Calender, Contacts and Tasks. The button
area is "fully expanded". (IE, I hit "Show More Buttons" until it was greyed
out). If I click any of the buttons, I no longer can access the Mail Pane
through the Navigation Pane (at least not without using the Go menu or adding
in new buttons).

I would have expected that when Outlook Today is used that the default pane
in the Navigation Pane would be the top most button / pane available.
