Default Incorrect paper size displayed Office 2003

So, I don't know how this happened but when I fire up word the paper
size should be 8.5x11 and it is selected in the paper selection as
such, but it is displayed as such (8.25x9 ??) (see screenshot @
http://mysite.verizon.net/dberb/index.html ). The margins are totally
incorrect and as you can see the L/R margin ruler starts at 0 and
there are 2 1" marks? Any idea what is going on??

I have deleted normal.dot and even reinstalled the Office suite, but
to no avail.

Dan,
I too had this problem which came up after trying to work with
labels. I looked all over for a solution and found none so I am posting
this since I believe I have found how to fix it.

Start Word
Choose Help
Choose Detect and Repair
Check the box for "Discard my customized settings and restore default
settings"
Click "Start"
From there just follow the instructions.

From what I can tell this appears to be a header/footer/margins
problem. I went in and told word to show headers and the page size
corrected but as soon as I clicked out of the headers area the page size
went back to the odd size of 7.25 or (8.5) to 9 or something, exactly
like your screen capture. I looked for several ways to reset the page
size from deleting the normal.dot (never would recreate on its own) and
copying in the normal.dot from another machine. The thing is the page
size is correct we just don't see all of it. Reinstalling would likely
have worked if you could have found all the old customized user settings
and deleted them.
