i have never done this before so im not sure if im doing it right. sorry if
im not.

my problem: purchased a hp laptop from best buy. as i have read the product
key on the backside of the laptop is not the right one to let me into my
microsoft word.
my husband set the computer up and he doesnt think that it was a trial

Unless you paid extra, and you can see from your bill, it will be a trial
version of Office. The key on the base of the laptop is for windows.
Its remotely possible the Laptop could have included Microsoft Works and if
any key is required for that it would be in the paperwork you got in the
laptop box

Ehlo kodi2279,
The product key on the bottom of your computer is probably for your operating
system (thus it probably says Microsoft Windows Vista Home Edition and then
the number).

The version of Office 2007 on your brand new computer is a trial. In order
to use full version, you would have to visit a store (same Best Buy, for
example) and purchase a full version of Microsoft Office 2007.

And uninstall any trial together with its activation wizard, via the
add/remove programs dialogue, then reboot prior to installing from cd/dvd
