Office 2003 / Works 8 conflict

Was told this was the right place to ask, so here goes.

There seems to be a problem I've been aware of for a few years.
When I install Works first, and THEN Office, everything works fine.
If I install Office FIRST, THEN Works........ the task launcher, and a
couple other minor features in Works, don't function.

I had installed Works 7 and Office 2003, and everything was groovy
because I installed them in the right order.... Works, THEN Office.

Well, I just upgraded to Works 8, and being Office was already on my
machine, the task launcher in Works 8 will not run. I have read of
conflicts between the versions of Word that both programs use, but do
not know if this the issue I'm having or not.
I have uninstalled both Office, and Works, then reinstalled them in
proper order..... but still no go. Have tried "Repair" function of
each....no go. Tried reaming all info I could find pertaining to both
Office and Works in the registry, then reinstalling...no go.

I know I can solve this by doing a clean install of Windows, and
reinstalling the programs in correct order (have done it in the
past)........ but I don't want to... I have over 150 Gigs on my
machine that I would hate to re install just now.

I found the same "order thang" to be true with Office XP, and Works 7.

Anybody here know how to restore the task launcher function of Works
without doing a complete start over?
Any tips, suggestions, help will be appreciated and tried.
