Default Normal resists formatting

Normal is the default doc. that appears when opening Word. Suddenly it begins
every doc. on line 1 at the very top of page and ends on last line at bottom
of page, even though Page Setup clearly shows larger spaces for Top and
Bottom margins. I have tried several times to modify this through Styles and
Formatting, and also have tried different margin sizes on Page Setup. But
nothing sticks; Normal always returns to that spontaneous default.

Any suggestions of how to set Normal the way I want it and make it stick?
Otheerwise, Word is working fine.

I have WinXP Home-SP2 and self-standing Word 2003.
