See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customizat...alTemplate.htm.
Note that this article applies to Word 2003 and earlier. A new article for
Word 2007 is planned but has not yet been written.

On the Margins tab of the Page Setup dialog box, specify the desired
margins, and then click the Default button. Word saves your changes to the
attached template.

To display the dialog box: In Word 2007, click the Page Layout tab, and then
click the dialog launcher button (the little arrow on the bottom right) of
the Page Setup group. In Word 97--2003, click File | Page Setup.

Now I see that Suzanne has already replied with a link to an article on how
to customize the Normal template. Read that one for the "complete" story.

However, since I've already given the quick answer on changing the margins,
I'll do the same for the font: Press Ctrl+D to display the Font dialog box.
Make the desired changes and then click the Default button.
