Word was unable to open the data source
I have 2 computers at work that will not open any text
files as data sources for mail merge. All the other computers will but these two won't. I can't find any settings that are different and they all use the same version of Office 2000. Anyone any idea what is going on? Thanks |

Word was unable to open the data source
If it helps Word on those computers can open the text file
as a document juct not as a mail merge source. -----Original Message----- Could the difference be one of these: a. the two computers have ODBC installed, and the others don't b. all the computers have ODBC installed but there are different versions c. as (a) or (b), but the ODBC text driver is present/absent/different version? -- Peter Jamieson "Tharmagon" wrote in message ... OK, your other idea seems more likely.

Word was unable to open the data source
That could be the key. So
a. what exactly happens when you try to open the text file? b. what happens if you check Word Tools|Options|Confirm conversions at open, then try to open the text file? Specifically, - which source type (Teext, Encoded text, ettc. etc.) is selected in the dialog that (probably) appears? - is the list of source types the same on the offending machines as the non-offending ones? -- Peter Jamieson wrote in message ... What do you mean by "is the list of source types the same
on the offending machines as the non-offending ones?" How do I check that? Thanks Tharmagon -----Original Message----- That could be the key. Word was unable to open the data source
When you have checked Tools|Options|Confirm Conversion at open, when you try
to open a text file, you see a dialog box with a list of file types that Word can convert from. So I was wondering if the list that you saw on the "bad" machine was exactly the same as the list on the "good" machines. The only way to compare the two is either to have the two machines side by side or write down the contents of each list, but the lists are typically not very long. -- Peter Jamieson "Tharmagon" wrote in message ...
