error 1321 setup cannot modify c:\config.msi\??????.rbf
I have a Dell PC that the hard drive died. After getting the new one I began
to reinstall the software OS, pathches, office etc... After getting to installing Office 2000 Pro, It gets to halfway in the installation and I get this error. Error 1321. Setup cannot modify the file c:\config.msi\270353.rbf. Verify that the file exist in your system and that you have sufficient permissions to update it. After hitting okay the installation backs out. It seems I ran into this problem 6 months ago and it took forever and a day to fix, however what I remember I had to either go into securtiy and reset permissions or the registry. I just can't remember. Any way I gave up and decided to reformat and install office first rather than after installing the MS patches and the install was successful. Then after installing varouis updates I then procedded to install AutoCad and got the same error. I really need help on this one. I have admin rights and have checked all the usual stuff. Any help would be a blessing. Thanks |

Hi, Clayton,
Did you check that SYSTEM has all permissions? See this: Various Error Messages When MSI File Creates and Modifies Files and Registry Keys: http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;232143 Also, if this software was provided and pre-installed by Dell, you'll probably want to contact them for support. -- Hope that helps, Susan Ramlet MVP - Office Please reply to the newsgroups where others may benefit. Susan,
The System account addition fixed the problem. This was odd because I checked this the day before and it didn't work. So I will post what I did to get it to work. Open Windows Explorer Make sure you set it to View all files including System and hidden files See if there is a config.msi directory If so great, if not create one. Right mouse on the directory Select the Security Tab Make sure the System account has all rights, you might have to add it here. I also believe I clicked the advanced button and clicked the box to reset all sub-folders with the same rights. This might be enough to get pass the problem, if not You might also have to do the same on the root of C: Thanks Clayton "Clayton" wrote: Thanks i saw that one already, no help there.
