newsgroup subscription box
Up until very recently, from the newsgroup subscription box in Outlook Express, I used to be able to select any particular newsgroup, and then visit the newsgroup without being subscribed to it by simply pressing the "go to" button. After navigating away from the NG by clicking on another mail folder or NG folder, a dialog box come up asking if I would like to subscribe to the NG ? I would click on the 'no' box, and the folder for that NG would disappear the next time OE was started. Now I find that pressing the "go to" button results in being automatically subscribed to the newsgroup, and then having to "unsubscribe" to get it off my list of regular newsgroups. This is somewhat of an inconvenience, but I cannot find any settings in OE6 that would allow me to return to the original settings whereby pressing the "go to" button does not result in a subscription to that newsgroup. I should probably mention this issue seems to have coincided with my recent application of all the latest Office 2000 updates which I was several years behind on installing. One thing that I did try which did not resolve the issue was completely removing the news account and then adding a new one after restarting OE6. The "go to" button continued to result in a subscription to any particular newsgroup rather than "going to it" as desired. I feel like this may be an issue with the registry, but haven't the slightest idea how to correct it. Anyone here possibly familiar with this issue and how to resolve it? |

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (FileIdentitiesAdd new identity). Assuming all is well, import messages from the old Identity before deleting it (FileIdentitiesManage Identities). Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. Disable Background Compacting and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm. Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. My default mail client is OE. Per your advice, I have disabled the McAfee
email scanning feature. I only have one OE identity- but will follow-up on that tomorrow when not so sleepy. Thanks for the response! |
