Anyone who posts with just a first name shouldn't be trusted at all.

I do not think it is important to be able to vet a name. When somebody speaks to you clearly using a false name you ask yourself why is he concealing his identity? Why is he not prepared to be accountable for his words and actions? It undermines the sense of being able to trust the other person. It does not matter whether that feeling is justified. Those sheltering in anonymity give off that aura! -- Gerry ~~~~ FCA Stourport, England Enquire, plan and execute ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NormanM wrote: On Thu, 29 Jan 2009 21:43:19 -0000, D. That's a little dated.

Those sheltering in anonymity give off that aura! All Usenet posts are inherently "anonymous". Whether using a seemingly real name, such as Lewis Ellison, or even Robert Feeple (I suspect an Internet search on the last would be interesting), or a clearly false name, such as "Mickey Mouse", "Donald Duck", or even Josey Wales (that is a character portrayed by actor Clint Eastwood, as is Harry Callahan), you have no way to gauge the trustability of poster, other than the veracity of the words he has posted. I know a guy who posts under the nym of, "Rev. Beergoggles". His words are eminently more trustable than those of a certain "D. Spencer Hines". -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

And the ironic thing is that this message was posted by DSH, a man (?) who has used the alias "Julia294" in this very group: http://groups.google.com/group/micro...c5d5fd4b04ad5f James James (BrE with a distinctly septentrional flavour) |

There are a few that make my my hair bristle. Mickey or Minnie Mouse are inoffensive but some are chosen to project an unpleasant / offensive personality. Surely you are not indifferent to the connotations that come with a name? -- Gerry ~~~~ FCA Stourport, England Enquire, plan and execute ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bruce Hagen wrote: "NormanM" wrote in message ... Content of messages is important but certain names project the type of personality of the person choosing the name. -- Gerry ~~~~ FCA Stourport, England Enquire, plan and execute ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NormanM wrote: On Fri, 30 Jan 2009 00:09:26 -0000, Gerry wrote: I do not think it is important to be able to vet a name.
