Default Office 2003

Hi all

I'm not sure what I did (I change things regularly) but after one use
of Outlook 2003 Setup appeared every time a new e-mail was selected and
it tried to find a file that it could not find and then quit setup
before displaying the new e-mail.

I tried 'Detect and Repair' which failed saying that it could not find
a cab file.

I tried Repair from the CD setup app which failed saying it could not
find another cab file.

I tried to Reinstall from the CD which failed saying it could not find
yet another cab file.

I bit the bullet and uninstalled this afternoon and installing still
fails at random points saying it cannot find one cab or another.

I have tried two different CD-ROM drives and I have checked the CD
surface (which is as clean as your favourite simile).

Any ideas or will Windows have to take the fall?

Hi, Gavin,

Did you do any kind of disk cleanup utility or system restore? This can
happen if the MSOCache folder is deleted:

"Installation Error: File not Found" error message when you try to update
Office 2003 programs from the Office Update Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875556/

PRB: Windows System Restore Does Not Monitor Windows Installer Patch (.msp)
Files:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;814833

Thanks for the reply. No, I did see those, but I haven't ever used
System Restore.

Particularly the first one's solution is to reinstall from the original
CD which I am attempting. As I type this I am reinstalling Office
without Outlook.

If no-one has an idea, hopefully the error-during-install reporting to
Microsoft will produce a result...

Unfortunately for the short term, the error during install reports don't get
you a response from Microsoft, but what they do is feed a database of error
data that Microsoft reviews to make product improvements going forward. So,
they're good for the long-term.

Anyhow, the steps in those two articles may be of use, even if you didn't
use system restore.

Strangely I installed Office without Outlook and all worked fine.

A bit later, and for no real reason, I tried installing Outlook again
from the CD and all went fine!

Thanks for your help anyway...
