Headers & Footers
Thank you for your suggestions. Maybe I can be more specific. I have a 6
chapter document. I want each chapter to start on an odd page. On the very first page I enter an odd section break. Enter even/odd page numbers -- then edit header to add the chapter title on the right hand side of the first page, next to the page #. For the next page -- an even page, I click the page numbers and select the even page (in this case I'm using Accent 1 & 2) Edit the header to reflect the even page text -- which remains the same throughout the document. No problem with this. At the beginning of chapter 2 I insert an odd page break, click to edit header and the Link to Connect button lights up. If I click on the header first -- the light goes dim. If I click on the button first, to disconnect, then edit the chapter title, it works. It works for two or three chapters, then when I advance to the next chapter, same process. Insert odd page break - -----now I want to change the chapter title but the link button is still dim. However, on the second page of the chapter it lights up. Here's where I start having problems. If I clink on the disconnect button on the 2nd page -- things start heading south fast. Even if I manually change the headers, it won't hold true when I move back and forth in the document. I understand word is adding a blank page to ensure odd page beginnings -- even when the next page is an odd one -- is this related to why I can't disconnect from the previous chapter to change the title? This is driving me crazy. Should I prepare the complete document then go back and insert the page #'s and headers? I thought I could just keep adding text, changing chapters as I came to them. You can access styleref through InsertQuickParts but I've never used it and word doesn't include it in their help files. -- oakridge "Stefan Blom" wrote: Indeed. -- Stefan Blom Microsoft Word MVP "Suzanne S. One would think that help topics still relevant for Word 2007 (after some minor changes) could easily be added to Word 2007 help, but apparently that is a difficult task. sigh -- Stefan Blom Microsoft Word MVP "Suzanne S. When you can't find something in Help in Word 2007, the best resource is http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...649261033.aspx, which provides access to the generally helpful Word 2003 Help file. Word 7 says it can't find any such thing. For more information about the STYLEREF field, click the Index tab in Microsoft Word 7.0 Help, type the following text STYLEREF -- oakridge "Pamelia Caswell via OfficeKB.com" wrote: A styleref field can do what you want. However, I want the chapter name to change in the header on each chapter. I've read all the helps and cannot find my error. I think it's in the section breaks but can't figure out where I'm going wrong. It seems to work for a few chapters then it either reverts to the previous one or when I set the last chapter -- the headers all change to that chapter name. I've been workng on this all week with no luck. Would so much appreciate any help!! -- Message posted via OfficeKB.com http://www.officekb.com/Uwe/Forums.a...ayout/201004/1 . . |
