Default Columns labeled with numbers not letters

My spreadsheets suddenly show numbers for the columns instead of letters --
columns now showing as 1,2,3,4, instead of A,B,C,D. Also formulas in cells
now showing up, for example, as RC[-2]*R[-4]C instead of G8*H5
How do I change the columns back to letters?

Click Tools/Options on Excel's menu bar, select the General tab on the
dialog box that appears and uncheck the box next to the label "R1C1
reference style" in the Settings section.

There is no Tool/Option on the toolbar in Office 2007. How do I get the coumn
headers converted from numbers to letters in this case?

Just wanted to say thanks for the answers on this thread...we spent about an
hour trying to figure out how to fix this. Not sure how it got changed to
begin with, but using this - we got it done. Thanks.

Thank you very much for posting this! I am still not sure how I flipped it,
as I know I was not in that screen before, but at least it is fixed now!
