Default Excel and office compatibility pack

Hi,

my system is windows XP pro and office xp with all updates.
In Administrator I installed the compatibility pack and when I click in a
xlsx file, a small window appears saying that the conversion is working.
Excel opens the file with a strange name and read only.

Can't open it directly from excel, invalid filte type.

When I change to another user account, nothing works, can't open the file in
any way.

Don't know if it works in word or powerpoint since I don't have a file to
test.

Any sugestions?

Best regards
Vitor

Hello Vitor,

As you don't say which version of Office you are using, I am assuming you are using Office 2000 or 2003 or similar. These cannot open the new Exel file extensions - .xlsx.

I have tried changing the file extension to .xls and found that did not work. My local library, where this situation arose, said it is possible to download a convertor, but I can't recall anything about the URL for it. However, if you Google it, it should come up in the results.

If this is what you have downloaded, and it isn't working, you should contact the software developers or the supplier you used direct, let them know precisely what you have done, what you are using and what is/isn't happening, and ask for their advice/assistance/help.

In the meantime, if someone has sent you the .xlsx file, ask them to Save As in Excel 93-2003 format, and re-send it.

Good luck,

Heather.
