Default Word 2002 Bullets and Numbering

I am trying to create customized formatting for specific bullets I use over and over - 3 different levels. Used to be able to do through Bullets & Numbering (Word 98), but now in Word 2002, the formatting disappears after closing down (as Help says). Have tried Help's suggestion of creating new styles (based on no style), which works.... as long as I never go back into Bullets & Numbering and click on a bullet there. When I do, it overrides my custom formatting in my style. These custom bullets and their formatting are standard for a group of instructional developers, so simply using only the Styles is not a solution - somebody won't. Another note - have turned off basically ALL AutoCorrect/AutoFormat, etc.

No matter how many trips you make to Bullets and Numbering (though you
should never have to once you have defined your bulleted/numbered styles),
this should not affect the formatting of your defined style provided you
linked the style to the list template. Using style-based numbering is the
only way to preserve your sanity.

Hi Suzanne and CMac

Alas a trip to Format B&N can change your styles if the list template
(pane)you select is linked to a style. Also, every time you go there, even
if you Cancel out, the count of list templates in your document increases
(that seems to be true even in 2003). It really is an abomination and work
of the devil!

Yeow! I guess it's a good thing most of my trips to B&N (which I always
cancel out of) are done in a blank document that isn't saved! When I'm
working in a "real" document, I visit B&N only by way of Format | Style |
Modify | Numbering (starting from the Level 1 style), as instructed by
Shauna.
