version problem

Hello,

I have an excel spreadsheet that was originally created in 97. After this I
upgraded to Office 2000 and had no problems viewing the file. Now I have
upgraded to 2003 and run into the following error when I try to open the
file:

"This file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Excel and a converted
is needed to open it. Do you want to download the converter from the
Microsoft Office Web site?"

1) I'm using the latest version so why does it think the file was created
by a "newer version"?

2) I downloaded the converter but it still won't open.

3) I tried opening the file on a 97 machine but get the same error.

I don't seem to have any problems with any other "old" files so it seems to
be file specific.

Any suggestions what to do next?

does the file contain a data map? according to help you can't open a file
in 2003 which contains a data map ....

A "data map"? Not sure what a data map is but I don't think so. It might
contain a macro or two.

But as I said, I can't even open the file in 97 which it was originally
created in. Gives me the same error.

Hi

sorry missed the line about not being able to open it in ver 97, sounds to
me like the file is corrupt ... have you tried opening it in ver 2002 - it
has a reputation for being quite good at recovering corrupt files -

you might also like to try the demo download at
http://www.conceptdata.com/excel/ to see if that works for you (i've never
personally used it)

a google search may turn up other ideas for recovering a corrupt file
