Default Formating cells - "Too Many Different Cell Formats" Error

When I am working in excel- and I try editing the format of a cell (like
merging 2 together) I get a pop-up that tells me "Too Many Different Cell
Formats".

It doesn't give me any options of what that means- or how to fix it.

Has anyone encountered this problem? I really need help.

Any replies appreciated-

Try selecting the cell whose format you do not mind loosing. The on the
menus at the top of the screen select Edit... Clear... Formats.

Regards...

Maybe...

XL: Error Message: Too Many Different Cell Formats
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=213904

A few people have said that OpenOffice.Org has been able to open the file. Then
they clean it up and save it there. Then excel can open that cleaned up
version.

http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-104 meg download or a CD

Default Formating cells - "Too Many Different Cell Formats" Error

Krisml:
I have been fighting this same "error" for two weeks, and it is impacting a
huge Budget workbook with about 10 worksheets that are interlinked. The most
bothersome were cells that have date formates, becasue they all change to
numbers. But all of the simple formats, like numbers as currency keep
changing also, to unformatted numbers that fill the entire cell with
decimals. And the fonts keep changing also.

In desperation I went out a bought a new computer, with XP installed as the
operating system, and I installed Office 2007 (Home & Student Edition).

After 3 days, it seemed like I was still in trouble. Then I got some help,
who advised me NOT to save down to older versions. Because lots of floks in
my company do not have new Office versions, I have always saved my Excel file
with the "Save As" button, as "Excel 97-2003 Workbook" format.

I have finally verified (still tentatively) that my "Save As" procedure is
causing this format error problem.

If I do not Save As, but instead just save the file as an "Excel Wookbook"
(which is the default, without using Save As), then the formatting I set up
stays put.

So I believe I can now complete my task of building this huge budget,
without wasting hours each day revising cell formats.

Hope this helps you.
